First Quarter Updates on the Philippine Tourism Industry

PHILIPPINE TOURISM: CREATING EMPLOYMENT WITH EXPANDED INVESTMENTS AND INCREASED TRAVEL MOVEMENT

Room capacity in key tourist destinations for the first quarter of 2009 expanded with the opening of new hotels and resorts that created additional employment in the midst of global economic downturn.

For the period January to March 2009, a total of 1,231 additional rooms were opened. With an aggregate cost of P8.016 Billion, these new investments directly employed 1,286 people.

The opening of the P3.18 Billion Imperial Palace Water Park, Resort and Spa increased the room supply in Cebu by 4% to 14,792. With 616 rooms, this new tourism project provided employment to 780 workers.

The San Remigio Beach Club in the northern part of Cebu has also opened its new facilities during the first quarter. With P8.5 Million in investments, the resort has built a convention facility to capture the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) of both international and domestic markets.

Shangri-la’s Boracay Resort and Spa, a high-end 217-room resort in Boracay Island, opened just in time for the influx of tourists on vacation and long holidays. The resort has initially hired 488 workers to manage its various ranges of product offerings.

Seven locators investing in 28 cluster villas for a total cost of P 761.9 Million in the Amanpulo Tourism Enterprise Zone in Palawan also began their operation during the first quarter.

In Metro Manila, the opening of the Legend International’s Park, Bed and Breakfast Hotel, Eurotel Hotel Branch in Makati, and the expansion of Oakwood Serviced Residences increased the total room supply by 320.

By year-end, some 1,946 people will be directly employed nationwide once the additional 2,315 rooms become operational in the following destinations:

· Metro Manila: Manila Ocean Park (120 rooms), The Picasso Serviced Residences (136 rooms), Newport Marriott Hotel (342 rooms), and Maxims Hotel (178 rooms)
· Cebu: Radisson Hotel (400 rooms)
· Boracay: Crowne Regency (449), Phonex Hotel (130 rooms), Boracay Regency Lagoon (120 rooms), Seven Stones (100 rooms), Grand Water (100 rooms)
· Puerto Princesa: Microtel Inns and Suites (50 rooms)
· Tagaytay: Summer Ridge (108 rooms)
· Albay: Discovery Bay Misibis (82 rooms)

With greater demand for tourism services, the Department of Tourism (DOT) endorsed five development projects worth P6.323 Billion in the first quarter of the year. These initiatives will generate 6,340 employment opportunities for local residents in the said tourist areas.

A US$ 200-Million luxury spa and resort is also set to be developed by Banyan Tree in a 55-hectare property in Diwaran Island of Palawan. This project will generate 8,000 direct and indirect jobs during the planning, construction and operational stages from 2009 to 2012.

In Subic, Harbor Yacht Services (HYS) Philippines will construct a restaurant and resort in a marina facility with an investment package of P 36.1 Million.

Creating New Tourist Products

An 18-hectare manmade lake called Lago del Rey, the biggest in the country, was opened to tourists by the Provincial Government of Camarines Sur. With the cost of P 20 Million, this new tourist product complements the wakeboarding park set up by the LGU in 2005. The facility offers family-oriented activities such as boat ride, fishing, and swimming, among others.

Anguib beach in Sta Ana, Cagayan has started to draw foreign and domestic wind and kite surfing enthusiasts because of its unspoiled natural wealth and wider and bigger reef ideal for the said sports. To promote the area, the DOT and Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) have organized a windsurfing exhibition which was highly attended by international and local windsurfers.

With increased demand for nature and wildlife adventure, the DOT and the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines have jointly developed birdwatching tours in coordination with tour operators and LGUs in key destinations. The most notable bird watching sites are in Balanga Ciy, Candaba Swamp, Paitan Lake, Pantabangan Dam, Puerto Princesa, Hundred Islands National Park, Subic Bay, Olango Island and Mount Apo.

The Wildfowl and Wetland Trust, a leading conservation organization in the United Kingdom will dispatch a fact finding mission in May 2009 to assist the DOT and other agencies in the preservation and promotion of wetlands for wildlife habitat.

A sea kayak tour has also been designed by the DOT and the LGU of Alaminos in the Hundred Islands National Park in Pangasinan. Managed by the Hundred Islands Eco-Tour Association (HIETA), a community-based organization of out-of-school youth, the package involved a half- and whole-day kayak clinic and tour of the charming islets of the Hundred Islands as well as camping experience in Bolo Beach. The HIETA has been tapped by the DOT and Sun and Sea Kayaks to provide tour services during the Kayak Explore Hundred Island Summer Eco-Challenge in April 2009.

Capping on the popularity of the CamSur Wakeboarding Camp, a P500-Million Wakeboard Park will rise on a 12-hectare area in Silang, Cavite.

Increased Travel in Key Destinations

Tourist arrivals in top destinations of the country during the first quarter of 2009 grew by 10.33% for a total of 1.3 Million.

Cebu attracted the biggest volume of visitors with a share of 32% followed by Boracay (12%), Davao City (11.9%), Camarines Sur (11%), Zambales (7%), and Bohol (5%).

Domestic tourist arrivals to Puerto Princesa City and Coron in Palawan posted a record breaking growth of 392% as more flights were mounted to these destinations from Manila, Cebu, and Caticlan as well as Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia. Likewise, local visitors flocked to Camarines Sur for wakeboarding, Surigao del Sur, Sorsogon (Donsol) for whale shark interaction, Zambales (Subic) for recreation, Ilocos Norte and La Union for sightseeing and beach holiday resulting in double digit gains in these destinations.

Overall, the volume of domestic tourists visiting key destinations grew faster at 13% while foreign arrivals recorded a 4% hike in the first quarter.

Cebu was the most frequently visited destination by foreign tourists with 184,790 arrivals followed by Boracay (63,903), Zambales (25,252), Camarines Sur (24,976), and Bohol (24,350).

As sheer luck would have it on a last minute notice, two of my blogger friends Iris, Bobby and I, witnessed Sen. Mar Roxas and Ms. Korina Sanchez's live confirmation of their engagement on Wowowee.

Ms. Korina was set to be Mr. Willie's host for a segment wherein Sen. Mar donated "padyaks" as prices. Surprize! The Senator arrived and the gameshow was instantly, temporarily transformed into a talk show.

When Mr. Willie Revillame asked how Sen. Mar proposed the latter was happy to oblige. While he was restating the most important part..tears started rolling..tears of utter joy for sure! Ms. Korina wiped the tears off Sen. Mar's face and may I say be it cheesy for others but that moment was "priceless."

When will the wedding be? Maybe December's a good month, white wedding..before Christmas? But for sure if one of them files a leave of absence from work, then the wedding bells may be a few blinks away..oh well, just a guess (wink!wink!)

Eastwood Easter Wonderland =]

Eastwood City offered kids and kids-at-heart five worlds to celebrate Easter this year.

Their "event passport" included various fun-filled activities at a petting zoo, science exhibit, an arcade, magic tricks and mimes, a pony ride arena, a marching band with cosplayers, a face/glitter paint booth, henna tatoo booth, a photo booth, etc. and oh, their Easter egg was larger than an ostrich's egg (major painting session ensued) and little girls got makeovers and treats from David's Salon too!

What can I say but its never too late to have a happy childhood. Thank you Eastwood City for an awesome Easter event!

Jamal Malik is a penniless, eighteen year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" He was arrested due to the allegation of cheating on the premise of how could an uneducated street kid possibly have such knowledge. The Police Inspector probes Jamal overnight and learns of his incredible past, tales of the slums where he and his brother Salim survived, encounters with local gangs to his heartbreak over Latika, the love he lost. Surprisingly, chapters of Jamal's life reveals where he learned the answers to the gameshow.

I highly recommend this flick not just for its uplifting message of hope but moreso that Filipinos may appreciate life here. The first thirty minutes detailed life in India if you are a poverty-stricken kid..family even. Their travails are such a shock especially when its pertaining to basic needs. There are depictions of a more comfortable life in India, still relatively not what some people have here, but corrupt as well. We tend to take for granted our little priveleges or blessings in life like clean water, clean loos, tryke/pedicabs/fx..heck we even have "tingi" or sachet shampoos, deodorants, etc...just watch it and you'll truly appreciate life here in the Philippines!

Yup, cooking is a passion in our family =]

Okay, so where do I start coz its been like months that I've been meaning to write about this. Oh well, here it goes..My family has different passions like singing, dancing, travelling, sports, advocacies, etc. But what surprizes most is the foodfest whenever we just want to hang around for the weekend, swimming at the clubhouse, picnics, occasions at home or even instant entertaining for close family friends.

Each has their specialty so to speak and its a given. So every "cooking session" we plan/meeting first (menu, cooking preparations, etc.), list the ingredients/cookwares, head for the supermarket (like an amazing race especially if its an instant get-together), prepare (if need be like if its to be marinated, chop/slice/dice in advance, etc.) and then the show begins (..insert Iron Chef shout here haha!).

Cheese platter (haloumi, brie and tasty); Salad Greens (alfalfa, romaine and arugula with vinaigrette..top left); Different sausages (top right)

Last holidays twas like a ballet of sorts coz even if we focused on our task we help out each other with slicing, dicing, if its seasoned enough, etc. plus the burners, the fridge, the freezer, the oven, even the barbecue corner..almost every kitchen appliance is at work.

So now you might be wondering what do I specialize in whenever there's a gathering..How dare you..haha!

Biko (sticky sweet brown rice); Shrimps sauteed in olive oil and garlic; Bean and Potato Salad; Cold Light Macaroni Salad

Salami, Australian ham, Australian bacon and Prosciutto wrapped in melon slices

Shrimps sauteed in olive oil and garlic; Salad greens with vinaigrette

Tuna pasta (tuna with peeled tomatoes sauteed in olive oil and garlic) topped with parmesan

Well, at home I used to bake brownies, cheesecake, etc. (now my oven's broken..*sigh*), pasta especially tuna with olives (moi sis and cousin doesn't really like capers), herbed scrambled eggs or eggs benedict as I learned from moi Auntie Sally, my chinese vegetable noodles is a win (simple but filling), chili tahong as I learned from moi sis (always have it even for karaoke sessions haha!), etc. but don't get me wrong I am no expert.

As of recent entertaining galores at Auntie Sally's house here in Manila I've been the hors d' ouevres "refiller". About eighty percent of the hors d' ouevres or horses doovers as referred to in Australia are handpicked, packaged and delivered from Sydney..stashed in the pantry or in the freezer. For additional choices then a quick trip to Santi's will solve it.

The cheese fare consists of haloumi cheese (pan fried with a dash of lemon), brie, tasty (edam), blue, camembert and some infused with different flavours ( for example, ones infused with almonds comes preserved in a thin coat of black wax).

The abregana meats consists of australian ham and bacon, prosciutto wrapped in melon slices, salami (oh yeah, it smells but its delsih!), sausages, etc.

The pickled onions, black olives, pickled jerkins, etc. paired with port or brandy is also a usual fare.

Fruitcake doused with port or brandy is also present for the sweet tooths to munch on before or after the dindin.

Anyhoo, that's it for moi uber delayed family food post..my tummy's grumbling from all that taptapin' the keyboard..now where's that choco bagel?

After The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus meet and greet at Trinoma Activity Center, together with Leira, Mark and Ryan..we hopped to Cibo for a quick break and some "reading" hehe!

I had me a cup of Cibo's coffee and I must say its one potent concotion. I usually take my coffee black with minimal sugar but had to try this with cream as well to see if there's a bit of change..drip as it may seem but it hit me just right.

This is part one of my uber delayed posts about one of moi and my sis' passions regarding food..DESSERTS!

Fish and Co.'s has never ceased to keep getting better with innovations in their menu and the ambience, service, portions, quality, cleanliness plus the value for money is indeed worth it!

Here are some of their desserts which I recommend for food lovers and for your bingeing galore moments..enjoy!

Fruit Salad - not the usual Filipino-style fruit salad since this includes apples, peaches, grapes, etc. w/ a nice scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with choco syrup..uber delish and their serving is fit for two or three to share.

Tiramisu - their take on a classic italian dessert made of lady fingers and mascarpone cheese is good and the serving is fit for two or three to share.

Choco Cake ala mode - more like a mud pie ala mode; the choco cake is rich and moist and the vanilla ice cream is a welcome balancing factor and the serving is enough for two to share.

Creme Brulee - Burnt Cream in French, Leche Flan for Filipinos, Burnt Cream, Crema Catalana or Trinity Cream in Europe consists primarily of a rich custard base with a layer of hard caramel done using a handy chef's blowtorch. This version is of a rich vanilla custard base and the usual hard caramel is replaced by poured cooked caramel. Surprisingly light and great with coffee shared by two.

Peaches and Ice Cream - well the tag speaks for itself plus a generous topping of strawberry syrup and fit for two to share.

Heavenly Chocolates..Indeed! =]

It has been three long weeks since the e-mailed invite and it was worth the wait. Chocolatier Benjamin Pedrostarted off with a brief history of chocolates from the Mayans (500 A.D.) who used Cacao beans as currency; the Aztecs (15000) when Hernan Cortez met Montezuma and brought the Cacao-Elite lifestyle to Europe to the present.

Caco (theobroma Cacao) cocoa plant; "food of the gods"; from the Aztec language word of "Cacahuati". The choco-tasting started from Champagne Sachi/Chocolate Nama (better than Royce hehe!), a bit of Peru (which was mild with a hint of dry flowers), but I liked Mexico harsh and intense. Ivory Coast has basic taste; Madagascar has fruity notes and Ecuador of smooth and intense cocoa taste are also available at their shop along Roces Avenue perpendicular to Tomas Morato in Quezon City.

The flavour factors as shared to us by mr. Pedro depends on the following factors: Bean variety; Cimate and Altitiude; Harvest Technique; Roasting Practices; Conching Process; Flavour Release and of course, Personal Mood. The important process starts from the Harvesting, Fermenting and then the Drying..from from the farm, to the cocoa processor to its Tempering (preferred liquid, semi-liquid and solid form).

Sugar rush indeed..worth every gram of it! Its a must for all chocolate lovers and to convert non-chocolate lovers to drop by and have a taste of Heavenly Chocolates.

The conversation with DPWH Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. last March 16 was delayed when the information that Undersecretary Ramon Aquino has passed.

He succumbed to multiple organ failure, the result of more than a week's battle for life from March 11's ambush outside the DPWH’s office in Manila. Up to now the reason for the attack is a surprise to his family, friends and colleagues.

His body will remain displayed for public viewing at the DPWH office until Thursday noon. The official’s remains would then be brought to the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City for the interment at 3 p.m. that same day.

Aquino is set to be replaced by DPWH Undersecretary for Mindanao Romeo Momo.

Jane Goody dies of Cervical Cancer at 27

Jane Goody who became famous in 2002 when she joined the British version of "Big Brother," died of cervical cancer yesterday at the age of 27. She received her diagnosis during the filming of an Indian version of "Celebrity Big Brother" in 2008..it was all captured on film. The progress of her illness was always in the papers and on tv..even her surgery and chemotherapy.

I cannot stress this enough..[for anyone who reads my posts..especially those posts with a cause and not just events-related], to understand the depth of my eagerness, the reason why I make it a point to attend and help in any way with such advocacies because I know and coupled with prayers such posts are venues to inform and God-willing save a life.

Cervical Cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide, with 500,000 new cases and 250,000 deaths reported each year. Over 80percent of cases in developing countries including the Philippines, where it is ranked as the second most common cancer afflicting Filipino women. Yet few women realize that cervical cancer is actually treatable if diagnosed early.

Cervical cancer is caused by a persistent infection with cancer-causing Human Papilloma Virus [HPV]. However, a single infection may take 10 to 30 years to progress to cancer, which gives a woman ample time to visit her doctor to combat this killer disease.

Prevention through the Single Visit Approach [SVA] and Vaccination is highly recommended.

We gobbled the Chicken barbecue, Pork barbecue and Sizzling Sisig..yummeh!

We were invited to a conversation..call it a meet or greet in a way, with DPWH Sec. Hermogenes Ebdane, Jr.; [for the Secretary's profile click here: http://www.dpwh.gov.ph/officials/secretary/ebdane/profile.htm]

Now before anything else I know some would think that its because DPWH is in hot water nowadays or because national elections is just around the corner. Be that as it may, I still went and will still honour similar future invites because as I always say, give people the benefit of the doubt. I mean really its a chance to ask questions and get answers straight from the horse's mouth so to speak.

It was a very light conversation starting with the Secretary's introduction about his military career and how military principles especially "jungle survival" tactics has been a guide in decision-making. A compilation of completed projects was there for us to peruse before the conversation began and of course we asked about his future projects; [most can be found here: http://www.dpwh.gov.ph/doing_business/index.htm]

As for future plans [read: running for a position in the 2010 elections], his answer was safe to say the least. He said that with running for any position one must first think if he is capable in all aspects [physical, emotional, psychological, financial, etc.] And indeed he acknowledges the fact that in the Philippines, "popularity" is an important ingredient in winning.

As for the World Bank, First Gentleman, ambush, contractors, etc. issues..well, I leave that off the record. My having an experince working for a known politician and a certain political party plus four years of law school is I think not enough reason for me to speak about such issues. Besides, I think every Filipino has a good head on their shoulders and that their cirsumstances shape their decision in choosing whomever is fit in 2010.

This was a wish come true..thank you to Ms. Noemi Lardizabal-Dado, Ms. Dine Racoma and POC.

I love BB not only because she's classy but sweet [a true lady indeed], but moreso because of her very positive outlook in life despite all the criticisms.

Pinoys have not fully embraced the lgbt community and BB is a very brave soul that said community is proud of. I may not be lgbt but I have joined in their pride march and other activities..but still the issue is not the sexual orientation, its how you can contribute to society in a positive way..the person as a whole so to speak. Up to now the source or cause scientifically or genetically speaking of being "gay" is unknown. But do we really have to have medical proof..its not a disease, its a preference. Factors such as environment, childhood, etc. contributes to a person's character/personality/attitude..so what's the big deal?

The proper term is "transexual" [people who consider themselves women despite being given male sexual assignments at birth] STRAP or Society of Trans and Gender Rights Advocates of the Phils. [http://tsphilippines.com] have been present since 2002 believes BB is indeed a "real" woman..I concur completely.

Here are some BB-isms which I find very true and will help in embracing some lgbt facts:

"Being gay is not a preference; it's not something that you cannot change. It's something that you have to accept and learn to live with. Being gay is not a choice either. It's an orientation."

"I don't believe God created gay people. Our experiences in this world do. When you have come to realize that you're gay, that's when you turn to God, not to ask Him to change you, but to ask Him for forgiveness, mercy and more importantly, acceptance."

"There's wisdom behind chance encounters. After meeting new people and gaining new friends, we become a different person. Our personality goes through a never ending process of change because we constantly learn from people around us."

"I've always believed the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom."

"Be all what you can be."

It took me awhile to write about this wonderful experience because I have relatives and friends whom have had negative experiences just because they do not conform to the "common/normal" sexual orientation dictated by society. I will definitely post more about said topic focusing on the positive side because a lot of the negative has been said. Enough of the bashing..lets look deeper..the person as a whole.

I received an uber khuel e-mail [yet again..keep it coming hehe] from Yehey.com to join "Fish and Co.'s Prep Up The Platter Challenge". Uber pressure coz the e-mail required to submit ingredients within the weekend and I was O.C.-ing coz food is my family's greatest passion. Moi sis [the better cook] helped me with gathering Malaysian dishes that I was assigned..compiled from appetizers, main fare to dessert. Sent e-mail complete with procedures [yeah, O.C.-ing much haha].

March 12 bloggers trooped to Fish and Co.'s Shangri-la Mall branch without a clue [nervous as heck..will they make us cook?] what to expect but excited as ever..Yehey.com has been "Amazing Race" influenced these days haha. We were given our designated country-sash..camwhored of course..then we were given a a modest amount to purchase a list of ingredients at the supermarket downstairs.

Imagine, we ran to the supermarket sash and all..the look on the people's faces were awesome haha and the supermarket attendants were flabbergasted. After purchasing all the ingredients we dashed back to Fish and Co. and were tasked to "pimp up" the platter ala-Malaysian, Philadelphia, Indian and Japanese style.

Our platting prowess were awakened..[read riot galore haha] as we cut, sliced, poked, wrapped, dissolve, spooned with the sauces and garnish. Anything goes and it was sooo fun. the end result was..uhm look at the photos hehe. Team Philadelphia won but everyone went home well-fed, brimming with smiles with the new "experience" and with great prizes.

Indeed Fish and Co. is the home of the "Best Fish and Chips in Town"..the food is good and fresh, because it is a division of Fish and Co. Restaurants Pte. Ltd. and Oceana Seafood Pte. Ltd. whose main business is is procurement and distribution of fish and seafood. Their fish takes about 15minutes to fry and about 25 to gently grill served straight in a pan], influenced by the Mediterranean fishermen's treatment of seafood. What can I say, moi initial visit for an exclusive solo food review [I still haven't uploaded moi photos..will edit soon promise] flodded me with happy memories of when moi and moi sister would visit their former Ortigas branch during moi sophomore year in law school. We have been meaning but really haven't tried the Makati branch coz we live in Q.C.

Jump to the present, during moi initial visit uber khuel exclusive invites for bloggers and foodies were asked to be coursed thru moi so to speak [I am not an expert don't get me wrong..but a passion for good food may be the keyword] plus the owner was then again apprehensive of tapping the blogging community. There was an incident when they invited more than a dozen but only a few showed up. They chose particular bloggers for the initial group food/establishment review. The invites are approved by the owner, composed of three to four once a week, on a day when there is no booked event.

If you were invited and you declined then you are already scratched from the week's list. A second invite depends on the owner solely. So far only a handful had experienced to be "Indulged" and are now full-pledged "addicts" haha.

Upcoming events will start after the scheduled renovation.

*So the next time you get an sms regarding a "review" grab the chance for its truly worth it. Personally, I will vouch that mere photos and testimonials will not suffice.. you have to experience Indulgence.

February 25, 2009, the much-awaited uber how-many-times-reschduled exclusive Indulgence Cafe/Resto review started around 7:00pm and ended a tad before 10:00pm. OMG is what I can muster as in [yet again] for their former branch in Ortigas was moi and moi sister's fave hangout during moi sophomore year in law school coz the place is not only conjusive to studying but the food is nothing short of glorious. Am so blessed to be part of its team all thanks to Leira Pagaspas as well as to "fate" as Master Diwa de Leon put it.

After the scrumptous meal and heavenly desserts at Indulgence Cafe we trooped to Warehouse 135 for its final party before its renovation. So stuffed, I was so sleepy and just sat there wondering if the sugar rush has "crashed" already haha coz my mind was all blank. Ryan Joson just danced the night away [prolly thats how the glorious meal affected her haha sugar high much *banana dance*] with fellow bloggers Jayvee Fernandez, Fritz Tentativa, etc. [sowee the uber sugar rush/crash was more potent than the vodka for me to remeber..but will soon edit this post promise].

Anyhoo, Ryan and I stayed at McDee's from 3:00am til 6:00am, talk about major bonding time happy time extended to the max haha.

If you're geographically-challenged like me [almost born without a an internal compass hehe] then you should grab a copy of Manila Street Atlas. It is compact, concise..user-friendly not just for people who have adequate transportation daily but for commuters as well.

The launch was held at Top Shelf, Fully Booked BHS. I went with Iris, Leira and Omar [uber true blogger friends], and were encouraged to join the "Get Lost Challenge" finding tagged invites for awesome prizes from the many levels of the bookstore [bloggers got three out of the four tagged invites from the second floor..I stayed to watch their belongings besides I already won a fabulous trip early in the aftee hehe] and the sample use of the Street Atlas. Premium prizes were given away by Fully Booked and San Miguel beer.

Speaking of SMB, there was also a "taste test" of their newly improved brewskies during the event presented by gorgeous female models haha. I especially like the one in the green bottle uber smooth and crisp.

This women's month, Bravehearts invites women to the Tour of Hope 2009, "Dare to be Bold', a cycling event that aims to raise funds and awareness for cervical cancer prevention.

Now on its second year, the 5-day charity cycling event will be held from May 24 to 28. This time the 500 kilometer bike tour will be taking the Southern Luzon route from Muntinlupa City all the way to scenic Camarines Sur. Lay forums on cervical cancer will be conducted per stop to help women in these communinities learn more about this deadly but little known disease.

*My late grandmother [father side] lived a healthy lifestyle but fought againts breast cancer. She had a masectomy but lived past a good number of years before succumbing to heart attack and complications.
*My mother also lived a healthy lifestyle but her resistance to [or was it fear because her family has history of diabetes and heart attack] to be diagnosed earlier resulted in a fatal sudden diabetic attack and multiple organ complications.
*My father was a smoker from the age of thirteen. He quit smoking for almost a decade but still his frequent asthma attacks later on were attributed to his lungs' low immunity level. He suffered a fatal asthma attack coupled with heart complications.
*An Uncle [father side] was diagnosed with prostate cancer a few years ago. He is under medication but scheduled for operation this year. As of this time I do not know if he has gone under the knife yet.
*My sister fought against myoma last year and had her ovaries removed. She's not married and had no children. A few weeks ago she suffered a mild stroke. She is almost well now except for the slightly slurred speech.
*An Aunt [father side] also lived a healthy lifestyle but recently [same day my sister had a mild stroke] she had a stroke. She stayed in the ICU for about two weeks, her left side is greatly affected and she cannot speak yet [we are hopeful that nothing's impossible and she will tell her childhood stories again..albeit repeated over the years]. As of this moment she is at home and awaiting therapy.
*Me, well at the age of thirteen I suffered from unexplained seizures wherein doctors were dumbfounded. But in a few months time I got fairly well and haven't had an attack until after my first course [Interior Design] in college. Still doctors cannot give direct answers and just diagnosed it as something related to low white blood cells count. Later in law school whenever I get dizzy spells or palpitations I regard it as anxiety attacks [I know what you're saying now, am in denial much but that's just me..cannot afford to stop studying]. Besides, the many times I almost died be it medically related or accident related..I just shrug it off coz life is short and I want to live life to the fullest.

*A cancer is a cancer is a cancer.. that is why when opportunities to help in any medical, legal or community-based advocacy, project, campaign what have you my sister, cousin [mother side] and I give our full support. We are full-pledged Gawad Kalinga advocates, not many people know that and for some they think we've given more than an arm and a leg but hey..you cannot bring tangible stuff in the afterlife so let other people benefit from it.

This is a first, but tis very important for me to open up once and for all [for anyone who reads my posts..especially those posts with a cause and not just events-related], to understand the depth of my eagerness, the reason why I make it a point to attend and help in any way with such advocacies because I know and coupled with prayers such posts are venues to inform and God-willing save a life.

Aside from Gawad Kalinga [legal, medical, day care, IT seminars, vaccinations, NSTP's, etc.] we also support PAWS, Sanofi Pasteurs' Anti-Flu vaccinations [oops, I haven't had my shot yet], Kaibigan ng PCSO..and now am more than proud to be part of Bravehearts.

Bravehearts is a multisectoral coalition led by Cancer Institute Foundation for the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network Program [CIF for CECAP]. We are dedicated to raise awareness on cervical cancer prevention and is currently supported by a growing number of women, including prominent personalities such as Sen. Loren Legarda, Rina Jimenez-David, Ellen Tordesillas, Atty. Gaby Concepcion and Suzi Entrata. Through Bravehearts, a monthly journal has been established and more than twenty lecture awareness campaign have been done.

Cervical Cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide, with 500,000 new cases and 250,000 deaths reported each year. Over 80percent of cases in developing countries including the Philippines, where it is ranked as the second most common cancer afflicting Filipino women. Yet few women realize that cervical cancer is actually treatable if diagnosed early.

Gold-A invites/pass, went with ed, leira and ryan..saw mark, rg etc. at the concert grounds. Uber Beatle Mania-like concert just couldn't pass it up. A word of caution though many lurks to just slash bags, pick pockets, etc. so we didn't use our cellphones and dslrs that much..safety first. The place was jampacked..oh yeah I got nervous getting swished especially when the fabulous stage fireworks ensued and the crowd went wild woohoo. Twas a tearjerker moment when the crowd shouted Francis M. and E-Heads paid tribute to The Master Rapper.

It rained with colourful confetti on the VIP section but we were busy looking at the other side coz of the simultaneous fireworks and the final [many thought so] song was being played. Many thought it was over but we knew better haha..three songs for the road woohoo.

We ate by the bay before proceeding to the after concert party coz traffic was hell and we anticipated we'll walk [but we hailed a cab haha] to Hotel Sofitel. The after concert was laid back..just being there was worth it. Saw J.R.M. and brother Roadfill [Moymoy Palaboy]. Was texted to proceed to Saguijo but really we were poofed beyond our wits.

A really great experiece shared with true friends..memorable indeed.

Watchmen premiere =]

After the uber khuel amazing race-like event at Island Cove we went straight to Gateway to watch the premiere of the much-awaited Watchmen..[I had bangs since summer 2008 in anticipation for Silk Spectre haha].

I was in awe at the effects, thge fast paced scenes, the depth of the treatment of the cinematography..but on the down side I don't see the point why MTRCB had to edit/cut the bed scene part when all the blood and gore was left untouched hehe.

Much to our surprize "Ros" watched too haha [see the photos]. Will watch again for sure before the allotted screening ends..sure would have been great if it was shown on IMAX but again, that's moi opinion.

Island Cove in coopertion with Yehey.com invited thirty [30] bloggers to partake on a different kind of event..sort of like an Amazing Race. We were informed a good number of days to prepare and a link or a mini-website was placed wherein a few information about each participant can be viewed..as well as the answer to "What's your winning factor?"

Needless to say a few went to the gym, went on a diet, did yoga and had swimming workouts before the event..some even had the flu or leg sprain a week before the event. Too much excitement I guess hehe.

I arrived first [fearing to be late and I live in Q.C.], had at least two hours sleep due to the excitement and the last minute Obsessive Compulsive thingy gong-on wether I packed the right stuff or whatever haha. The meet-up was at The Fort 7:30am and we were given coffee and donuts as we await the other bloggers to arrive. Past 9:00am we were on Island Cove's shuttles and was driven off to Kawit, Cavite.

Upon arrival we were treated warmly by the Island Cove staff and the briefing started with Yehey.com peeps while we were served a breakfast of jumbo hotdog sandwhich and fresh orange juice [yummeh]. I was having second thoughts about wolfing down the enormous hotdog sandwhich coz we still don't know what we were about to do. Oh well, better have a full stomach than go hungry while doing "phsyical tasks" so to speak.

After the great breakfast we were grouped into teams, met our tour guide and then scooted off to tour the many exciting and educational areas/facilities of Island Cove. It was a mix of butterflies, birds, ostrich, monkeys at first, then the paintball area [woohoo], swimming pool, large chess board, basketball court, floating nipa huts etc. [will post photos soon]

Our group arrived first for lunch, uber delish native fare..I especially liked the fresh fruits for dessert..all al fresco style nothing short of a real out-of-town treat.

After lunch we were briefed for the "physical tasks/challenge", we had our respective Yehey.com marshalls..the blood bath began ahahahahaha. The first challenge required us to run up and down, to and fro the many hotel rooms in search of the door with the special sign. Next [in no particular order now coz everything's a blur but twas a real blast hahaha..] the large chess, the photo ops "kiss the baby croc", the eating challenge [not the right combo food if I may say so..ampalaya juice, kuhol, frog's leg, spicy carrot juice just to name a few], the sack race, kayak/pool slide combo, karaoke challenge, the bike [OMG the bike-cramps-galore-ride hahaha], search for the other-side-of-the-mask.wwaaahh can't remember evrything haha..it all ended in the biggest floating nipa hut where though exhausted, everyone was all smiles.

While tallying the score we took our much deserved showers and just chillaxed for awhile at the designated rooms. Refreshed we went to the biggest floating nipa hut again to have snacks, awarding ceremonies and the message by former Congressman Gilbert Remulla..their family owns Island Cove.

After all the photo/camwhoring hehe..boarded the shuttles again, [moi and Joriben boarded the car of Yehey.com's Laszlo..tnxies boss Laszlo hehe] tired but with big smiles on our faces.

Oh yeah, some bloggers plus moi still went straight to Gateway to watch the premiere of Watchmen..but that's on my next post.

After the SM Marikina WiFi testing event I was "dragged" by Ria, Leira, Ryan, Jonel and Carl to go to The Fort to watch Ryan's cousin who's a member of The Company. We had dindin at TGIF's BHS first courtesy of Carl..Jonel and Ria had to go home already [awww..]. Needless to say it was much needed chillax time and a great bonding experience.

We trooped to the concert and was so taken by the uber khuel performance of The Company..they have never changed their "sound" so to speak..much better live if I may say so moiself! The rapport with the audience was really refreshing and fun..everyone sang, danced and just had lots of positive vibes. We got to meet and greet the group and have ultra mega photos as well..some have yet to be uploaded hehe!

All in all, good food, good music, good friends..equals really great time!

Last February 21, 2009 we were invited by Bravehearts for a seminar on cervical cancer awareness and prevention. The talk was led by Dra. Rebecca B. Singson whom have just arrived from Spain. After the very inspiring and educational seminar, we were brought to Armscor Shooting Range to take part in a shooters competition. An activity which represents the fight to eradicate cervical cancer.

Truly every woman in the Philippines should be well-informed about the fight against servical cancer, that it can be detected earlier, it is treatable and most importantly there is a vaccine which lasts for at least a very positive number of years. I urge everyone not only women, to spread the word and help us in the fight against cervical cancer.

Bizu Patisserie..an uber late post but khuel experience! =]

T'was almost three weeks ago that I've been raving/craving for chocolates online and one of those fave dessert places which moi sis and I really enjoy is Bizu Patisserie. Online buddy Paul Pajo saw my posts and lo and behold..Bizu has a Valentine's promo! So Aaron Tanco via Paul invited me and a few friends to an impromptu blogger's merienda at their Greenbelt branch.

Needless to say everyone who came albeit late got a really yummy surprise! We started w/ a few pasta dishes [must try also] , appetizers [fit to share] and then came the piece d' resistance..Desire Choco Cake, Strawberry Shortcake and of course the all time fave Macaroons/Macarons [coz the double "o" has a different meaning /different dessert in French]. Aaron Tanco was uber khuel with moi questions of how they keep their croquettes moist on the inside and crunchy but not oily on the outside, how they incorporate the pomegranates into the macaroons/macarons, how they procure real Baguio strawberries for the shortcake, etc.

Anyhoo, the pictures will say almost everything..but 'tis better to experience it yourselves. Their goodies are to savour most definitely with their fresh brewed coffee, own blend of tea or their assortment of fresh fruit shakes. Nuffnang had an uber khuel contest..blogger friends had the time to make an entry while I had to rush contracts, schedules and deal with asthma coz of the darn weather meh! After all, Ayala Mall digital gift cards, exclusive premium items and a chance to win a really exclusive Gucci bag were at stake! They awarded the prizes at one of moi and moi sister's breakfast menu faves, Heaven n' Eggs Glorietta 4..which now has a new chic look apart from its original country style interiors few months back or was it a year ago hehe!

After finally knowing who won the sought-after Gucci bag, we headed off upstairs to Cinema 2 to watch the much-awaited chick flick. I must say, it really surprized me. Its just like Legally Blonde but that referred to law..this referred to finances in general. Its a must see movie not just for shopaholics, but for peeps whom have financial/credit card debts, "addiction" in this case to shopping, plus of course the really LOL moments.

So, "I'm Sire..and I'm a shopaholic!" [meh!]

Kuya Bunso..a short film by Mica Rodriguez =]

There is no such thing as "coincidence". We meet people simply because of certain reasons..a purpose. Mica Rodriguez as well as the cast of Kuya Bunso are my dear friends in the blogging community, have united to fulfill Mica's vision and passion to make a film about autism. She has dear Carlo, her baby brother as inspiration..and most if not the entirety of the film is based on her life with Carlo.

I for one have a nephew here in Manila and another in Australia in the same condition. It takes a lot of patience, effort, understanding..real sacrifices when it comes to having a relative with autism. And the misconceptions of other people here in our country adds more to the challenge.

It took only two days to finish the shoot..no hassles, almost all one-takes only..unspoken support among everyone. I cannot wait for other people to see this truly independent film because in just a few words, actions, minutes..you'll understand the real plight of the people whom we cannot understand as of yet, those who are oblivious about the real world..the Kuya Bunsos's in our lives as well as the people who unconditionally love them.

SAMSUNG brings hope to underprivileged kids with launch of New Philanthropic Initiative.

Samsung Hope pledges record US$700,000 to 21 children beneficiaries across Southeast Asia and Oceania.
Program aims to raise social awareness by empowering local communities to decide grant allocation.

Three deserving beneficiaries that have made significant contributions in addressing children’s issues were identified in each of the seven markets that Samsung operates in across the region. Information on the beneficiaries is uploaded on the Samsung Hope microsite (samsunghope.org), where everyone can support their favorite beneficiary by pledging to let hope take off. Each beneficiary will receive a base amount with an additional grant to be determined by the number of pledges it receives.

Dirty Harry flicks are one of my father's fave [aside from Chuck Norris]..heck, he even looked like Clint Eastwood [w/ glasses] hehe. He took time to watch even if he was abroad. So needless to say am also a big fan of the actor, the director..the man.

The story is poignant and its poetic ending is bittersweet..serves all the questions and much more. A must watch flick bursting w/ not just action..it makes you ponder about life and death. I for one will definitely grab a copy of its dvd for moi collection.

This is another must watch tv series because for one as I've observed, the prosthetics used for the hands and feet are really uber khuel! Truly the ABS-CBN peeps do their homework and give their best to ensure quality entertainment.

YES MAN is a 2008 American comedy film directed by Peyton Reed and starring Jim Carrey. The film is based on the true story and 2005 book The Yes Man by British humourist Danny Wallace (who has a brief cameo in the film). Production began in Los Angeles, CA in October 2007.

The movie will be shown in the Philippines on January 21, 2009.

You could say Jim Carrey's character can mirror everyone who is facing the normal routine life going nowhere. But as they say the power of the word YES can change all that... But only if you mean it to agree.

The humor is straight Jim Carrey funny slap stick all over. Don't need to tell you how the story goes but I dared you'll say YES to watching it.

If you agree to saying YES this movie won't disappoint you unless if you don't appreciate Jim Carrey himself. Just open you mind and you'll know you will like this movie. Its an eye opener to anyone who would watch this film, and it might help you see things differently... But as what I said if you mean to say YES then we're all good.

The upcoming television series of onscreen partners Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson is the Kapamilya network’s first TV drama offering for the Year of the Ox, said respected television director Ruel Bayani.

“Nabuo ito dahil gusto natin na sa simula ng taon ay may maihandog na espesyal na drama,” Bayani said.

Following immediately his hit TV series, “Iisa Pa Lamang,” which starred Claudine Barretto and Gabby Concepcion, Bayani is directing “Tayong Dalawa,” with co-director Trina Dayrit.

Dayrit, on the other hand, shared that the creative team behind Tayong Dalawa had to come up with a storyline and schedule the shooting days within a short period of time but without compromising its quality .

"One Night Only" red carpet premiere =]

It all happened in one night.

Free-spirited and money hungry Jasmine (Katrina Halili) was all set to leave for Hong Kong with her new Chinese lover when her Congressman-benefactor Facundo (Ricky Davao) decided to have his return of investment. Forced to comply with a rather angry lawmaker, Jasmine had no other choice but to give in to the demands of this hot-blooded sponsor lest she be exposed for her frivolities.

Meanwhile, in a movie set, hunk actor Diego (Paolo Contis) was wrestling with a major issue involving a reporter named Meliton (Ogie Diaz) whom he beat up when the latter exposed his shady past. But this was really beyond Diego’s concerns for he had his eyes set on one of the talents on his set, a naive looking extra named Angela (Alessandra de Rossi). As he was manipulating events to get this girl in bed, he remained in touch with his best friend, Pons (Jon Avila).

Pons was a stud who worked as an advertising executive. And he too wanted to bed Vicky (Valerie Concepcion), a girl he met in Boracay. After spending so much on Vicky when they met on vacation, Pons realized that he was short-changed when she passed out on him. Unknown to the man, another girl-–Vivian (Diana Zubiri), a friend of Jasmine, was feeling guilty because she did not give in to the demands of Pons the night before when they went out on a date. So now she was determined to make appropriate amends.

The gay hairdresser of Facundo’s wife, Inday, was equally excited that day. Edward (Chokoleit) was a flamboyant beautician who was finally having his moment of truth with a man whom he has been taking care of for the past months. Edward mas madly in love with Nestor (Joross Gamboa) and this was the night that he will propose to him.

On the set where Diego was trying to get into the pants of Angela, the supervisor of the talents was a bull dyke named George (Manilyn Reynes). She was carrying on an affair with the make-up artist named Elvie (Jennylyn Mercado). Elvie, who happens to be the cousin of Vicky, wanted to end this relationship because she wanted to live a normal life. And this sent the lesbian’s world crashing.

Because of certain twists and turns and circumstances, all these characters ended up in the same motel called Lover’s Hideaway.

What happened was a night of chaos and confusion. What transpired for the next twelve hours ..will forever be traumatic!

“Dayo sa Mundo ng Elementalia,” the Philippines’ first all-digital, full-length animated film entry to the 34th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), has received a grade of A from the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB) when it was reviewed yesterday (Dec. 18), a day prior to its red carpet premiere at SM Megamall Cinema 10. This merits a 100 percent rebate on amusement tax for the animated feature produced by Cutting Edge Productions.

The CEB, which operates under the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), grants tax rebates to well-crafted local films.

“Dayo,” which is also being endorsed by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the National Council for Children’s Television (NCCT), follows the adventure of Bubuy (voiced by Nash Aguas), an 11-year-old boy from Antipolo, who takes on a journey to save his beloved grandparents abducted into Elementalia—a fantasy land thriving with strange flora and fauna and home to several enchanted creatures of Philippine mythology.

Bubuy meets Anna (voiced by Katrina Legaspi), a young and energetic manananggal (a winged creature that can separate her torso from her lower body) with a special fondness for all things human, except to eat them. The two live out an adventure full of wild, will-testing and comical experiences all over Elementalia—from an enormous lake heaving with gravity-defying merfolk to the breathtaking crystal cave dwelled by colorful alitubi (a cross between a firefly and dragonfly) to a magnificent old tree that is home to a motherly kapre (a sort of big ogre who lives on trees and smokes cigars) and finally to a majestic mountain protected by a big pack of hungry aswangs (shape-shifting creatures).

"Dayo" is a hybrid product of combining 2D and 3D animation, powered by Toon Boom using Macintosh and Linux platforms. 2D animation is used for the characters while 3D animation is used for the backgrounds especially for the big scenes.

At an estimated production budget of USD 1.3 million, “Dayo” is produced in Dolby 7.1 surround sound. The team behind “Dayo,” led by its executive producer Jessie Lasaten and director Robert Quilao, has collaborated with Technicolor in Thailand for its post- production.

The soundtrack of “Dayo” highlights the world-renowned Filipino performer Lea Salonga of her rendition of the movie theme song “Lipad.” Her performance and the entire musical score by Lasaten were recorded together with the FILharmoniKA under the baton of Gerard Salonga.

Apart from Aguas and Legaspi, the film features the voices of Pokwang (Vicky), Michael V (Narsi), Noel Trinidad (Lolo Meong), Nova Villa (Lola Nita), Johnny Delgado (Carpio), Peque Gallaga (Nano), Laurice Guillen (Diwata/Bruha), Gabe Mercado (Jo) and Pocholo Gonzales (Toti). Temi Abad, Jr. and Eric Cabahug team up for its screenplay.

The film is rated G or GP (General Patronage) by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).

“Dayo” supports the Cancer Warrior Foundation as its beneficiary.
